What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a collaborative process based on the relationship between the client and therapist. Grounded in a dialogue, it provides a supportive environment that allows the client to talk openly with someone who is neutral and nonjudgmental. Also known as ‘talking’ therapy, psychotherapy aims to help a person understand their feelings, uncover underlying causes of their problems and equip them to face new challenges, both in the present and the future.

To see positive results, a person will usually need to understand the need for change and be willing to work on themselves, be that learning how to manage their emotions, changing their perspectives (or how they look at or think about things), trying new behaviours, and often a combination of these.

Therapy can help with a number of issues. Here are just some :

  • Increase your self-esteem and confidence

  • Find ways to cope with negative feelings and build resilience

  • Improve your important relationships

  • Gain insights into the areas where you are facing difficulties

  • Change unhelpful thinking and behavioural patterns for more helpful ones

  • Make new decisions and start acting on them

  • Heal from childhood and past traumas

What is EMDR?

EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is an evidence-based, unique therapy that helps people recover from problems triggered by traumatic events in their lives. By using body’s natural mechanisms, EMDR assists the brain to reprocess difficult memories, leading to gradual reduction in troubling symptoms and facilitating healing from past traumas.

EMDR therapy helps people to get to the point when they still remember traumatic event or events, but these events do not have as much power over them any longer. People become capable of choosing their actions and responses based on what they believe is appropriate in the present as opposed to being guided by their past.

Internationally recognised, EMDR therapy is endorsed by the National Health Service (NHS), Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and many other bodies.

EMDR can help with a range of mental health conditions:

EMDR therapy is best known for treating PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) symptoms, such as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, difficulty to manage one’s emotions and form/maintain close relationships but it can also help with other conditions including:

  • Anxiety

  • Panic attacks

  • Phobias

  • Stress

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs

  • Performance anxiety

I am training to become an accredited EMDR Practitioner and am currently taking reduced fee EMDR clients. Please book a call if you'd like to discuss this.
